What's in store for the future?
Well, we all knew this was comin' - just a matter of time, I s'pose.
I received an email today from a colleague in the Pacific Northwest that I found a tad disturbing, yet interesting. It is a good discussion, and I hope I will get some responses to this blog. I'm curious myself!
Here is the email:
Hi Everyone,
Happy New Year!
Hope this email finds you all well, sorry about it's "generic-ness."
Here at SoundLogicAudio&Music, we've been producing audio and music since 1997. We work with voice-over, vocal and instrumental talent that we hook up over ISDN. We just discovered our ISDN provider is getting out of the ISDN business very soon.
I've been calling around since yesterday trying to find another provider and am coming to find out that ISDN is getting harder and harder to find. For years we've enjoyed ISDN for it's convenience (and would like that to continue), but It seems ISDN is going the way of the horse & buggy, dial-up, & analog TV signals.
I've used Audio TX Communicator (software-only solution) since 2001 and have had excellent results. It's been rock solid over both ISDN (to every other codec-even APT!) and over the internet (from Audio TX Communicator to Audio TX Communicator.) Some of us have used Source-Connect and whilst I've had good luck, other folks have horror stories. I'm reading about Musicam's IP solutions and Telos' as well, however I don't if anyone is going to use them or if they work with other brands(like a Musicam to a Telos, or Audio TX to Musicam, etc.) There are probably others solutions I haven't heard of.
My question to everyone is;
Where are we heading as an industry?
Audio TX ?
Musicam's solutions?
Telos' solutions?
any others?
Will Musicam hook up to Telos?
Will Telos hook up to Audio TX?
Should we all use Source-Connect?
Please respond if you have any information, just want to get a dialog going.

Hey Caryn,
I think ISDN is still going to be a factor for a while, (but not that much longer) and I've had an increasing request from clients for Source Connect as of late, so I just added it to my studio capability. It just made sense to me. My blog post of 1/17 documents the experience of getting "Connected". I really believe we are heading for internet-based platforms in many areas of our lives, and this is one of them. I am not certain the future "end all to be all" is going to be one specifc product... but I know audio quality and speed will improve, and I think it will all be happening via internet.
All The Best,
